What to Do When a Collection Agency Requests Payment for an Account Not on the Credit Report?

GetAttachment[1]My client received a letter from a collection company about an account she doesn’t recognize nor shows on her credit report as of 2 months ago. I’m assuming it is better to try to prevent this account from being added to her credit report, especially if it ends up being hers. So, is it a good idea for her to call the collection company to find out more information? This way, if we find out it is in fact hers, she can try to settle & prevent it from being added to her report. And if it is not hers, then I can mail a request for written verification.
